Amateur Radio or Ham radio is no just a hobby alone of a simple contact or just experimenting something useful for good operating of a Ham station. HAMS too can involves in many kinds of activities locally or world wide hosted by HAM locally or international.
Radio Amateurs can joint some contests such as:
CQ world wide 160-meter contest
CQ world wide WPX contest
CQ world wide RTTY contest
CQ world wide RTTY WPX contest
CQ world wide DX contest
CQ world wide VHF contest or some other contest such as
CQ All Asia Contest and others that host by other country's HAM society.
Besides contest, HAMS can claim awards base on their contacts that meets certain criteria.
Awards such as
WAZ (Worked All Zone)
WAS (Worked All States)
CQ DX Award
CQ DX Field Award
CQ WPX Award
CQ iDX Award
And many more. Certainly you need to have full HAM license to gain transmission to have a contact and claim those awards once the criteria fulfilled.
