Callsign

Well what is callsign? There are lots and lots of callsign around and typically callsign for Amateur Radio will be what I talk about today.

First off all Amateur Radio Operators round the world have their own callsign that they use almost everyday to do qsos, rag chew, contest, short signal reports and many other things.

Every radio or equipment that emits Radio Wave out to the Air need to be licensed accept for apparatus which exempted from licensing need. So every license that issued upon the apparatus carried a callsign and that callsign will be the name use in airwaves to identify a station.

In Malaysia view callsign assigned by ITU(International Telecommunication Union) for Malaysia is 9MA - 9Mz and 9wA - 9WZ. This are called prefixes and few alphabet follows as suffix later on. Callsign assigned for one particular country will not be assign to others. I can say callsign that Amateur Radio Operator hold is unique and there is no duplicate callsign at other place.

Well in Malaysia particularly Amateur Radio Station's callsign prefixes are divided into regions.

9M2 for West Malaysia Class A Amateur Radio Station
9W2 for West Malaysia Class B Amateur Radio Station
9M6 for Sabah's Class A Amateur Radio Station
9W6 for Sabah's Class B Amateur Radio Station
9M8 for Sarawak Class A Amateur Radio Station
9W8 for Sarawak Class B Amateur Radio Station

Then 3 more suffix alphabet will follows behind the prefix as one complete callsign. Example 9M2AAA and 9W2AAA.
